NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – A military vehicle rollover at Mount Bundey resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier during a training drill on Monday. The incident also caused injuries to five other soldiers. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the event on Tuesday, stating that the family of the fallen soldier had been informed. The occurrence took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, situated approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence requested that the public respect the privacy of the personnel and families affected.

Northern Territory Police responded to the training zone around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance also arrived at the scene. Emergency responders airlifted two injured soldiers to Royal Darwin Hospital by helicopter at approximately 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, three others were transported via aircraft at around 9:30 p.m. All five injured soldiers remained under hospital care on Tuesday. Support from Northern Territory authorities facilitated the medical evacuations from the isolated military site.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, stated that Defence has launched an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the scene as a land accident investigation board began examining the incident. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole mentioned that police are assisting Defence and conducting their own investigation on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed. Coyle noted that investigators require additional time to determine what occurred before the Army responds to their findings.
Investigation Underway by Defence
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the soldier who lost his life. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also expressed sympathies, describing the death as a tragic loss for the Army. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also offered her condolences, thanking emergency teams involved in evacuating the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey serves as a primary training location for the Australian Army, located southeast of Darwin. The area hosts exercises for Australian and allied forces, including live-fire training sessions. The latest fatality follows an earlier Australian Army training death in 2026. In May, Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a member of the Special Air Service Regiment, died after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay, with another paratrooper surviving with minor injuries.
Previous Fatal Incident at Mount Bundey
The Mount Bundey Training Area was also the scene of a fatal incident in 2017. During a live-fire urban training exercise, Private Jason Challis died. A coronial inquest by Northern Territory authorities later investigated the circumstances of his death. The Department of Defence pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court to failing to fulfill a workplace health and safety duty. The 2026 rollover remains a separate event, which is currently under investigation.
The identity of the soldier killed in Monday’s crash has not been publicly disclosed beyond confirming his age and sex. Officials have yet to release details about his unit or the specific training activity taking place at the time. The Australian Defence Force indicated that additional information would be provided as it becomes available. Police continue to assist in the coronal investigation while the Army is conducting its internal inquiry. No official findings have been announced regarding the reasons behind the rollover or the contributing factors to the deadly accident.
